YES!!

YES!!! I'm still not 100% sure if Arrested Development is coming out with a movie movie, but at least we'll have "The Arrested Development documentary project" (click for video).

They even have a website, http://arresteddevelopmentdoc.com/

"I think America missed this show by six months. In every definition of the word missed."

That's true -- I didn't start watching it until it was already over.

And Portia de Rossi is so hot. A lot of the appeal has to do with her personality and sense of humor. Kind of like the reason why Johnny Depp is also very attractive, haha.

Second Life Avatar

I'm taking a gaming class now and my first homework assignment was to make an Avatar on "Second Life."

So.
Scary.

Not only do people make money in their digital lives on this website, but they court, have sex, get pregnant and get married. Some people are virtual prostitutes while others are fashion designers--you pay for clothing, food, amenities and travel the cyber universe.

I adventured on the site, looking for free clothing (I didn't like my default outfit) and encountered some characters from all over the world by just approaching them and typing into the program.

I loved the Sims, but this is too much: real money, real people, digital environment. When does reality end (not to be cliche)?

Newsweek's 50 Books For Our Times

The List

I'm going to at least try to read a review of each and hopefully read at least one or two this summer.

OMGGGG part II

Toyota Unveils Wheelchair Propelled by Thoughts Alone

The technology could also revolutionize prosthetics at an important time for that field, as more and more soldiers return from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in need of prosthesis. Segway inventor Dean Kamen's DEKA Labs has developed a highly advanced prosthetic arm that responds to muscle commands in the remaining tissue of an amputated limb. BMI technology could bridge the link between brain and prosthesis, eliminating the lengthy rehabilitation process and restoring real time use of the limb.
OMG and one of my close friends is interning at DEKA right now! How cool!

Animal House in the WSJ... again

John Belushi as John Blutarsky/ Universal Pictures
Another article in the WSJ about Dartmouth, this one about Dartmouth frat culture by an '09 (recent graduate). Given the size of our school, I'm sure any '10 (rising senior) knows someone who knows her. Also, check out the comments on the article. Here's a choice one:

"The friends I made in college in the late 70s are still
my best friends today. We still get togther a few times a
year, but are nowhere near as wild as we were. We all
graduated, some of us pursued advanced degrees, and we are
all successful. We also have more fun when we get together
than we can ever have with our wives - and they know it!"

Really? More fun than you can ever have with your wives? No futher comment.

It seems like the zeitgeist is so Dartmouth-centric recently -- it's increasingly "cool" to namedrop or mention Dartmouth, whether in an article about preppy clothing or when referencing the over-consumptive college frat culture. I mentioned this to a friend interning in D.C., and this is what she had to say on it (both enlightening and dorky, and I agree with her):

---Georgina wrote ---

is it just me or is the[sic] more and more focus on dartmouth
recently?
--- End of quote ---

you mean in the press or the WSJ? we've had lots of
reasons to come up in the news lately - 1) new prez, 2)
the Dartmouth Atlas of Health (check it out - it's REALLY
famous and REALLY impressive that our researchers are
doing work that's SO instrumental in shaping the health
care debate that's dominating the press and politics), 3)
higher education in the face of the recession is a big,
big issue, 4) tim geithner!

haha

WE ARE SO COOL

and dartmouth has always gotten way more facetime in the
wsj than is strictly necessary haha

The best part is definitely "haha/ WE ARE SO COOL". At Dartmouth, that is called a self-call.

Skype

Reading the Times magazine today, I found this article about Skype infiltrating the privacy of the home and almost discouraging real interaction.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/28/magazine/28fob-wwln-t.html?_r=1&ref=magazine

I loved Skype when I was abroad in France, and when Georgina was in China it was great for keeping in touch! I think it's one thing if you rely on it to keep in touch and another to form actual bonds. I'm not sure what to think!

"The very technology with which we choose to communicate in a relationship has become a barometer of our willingness to reveal ourselves within it. Racy photos, amorous texts and nonstop Skyping may be just the thing for lovers who are separated during the giddy days of new romance. At the same time, all that virtual togetherness may overaccelerate a courtship. There is something to be said for the slow burn, for anticipation over immediacy. I’m relieved not to be single in a time when you can flirt, fall in love, sext and break up with a guy without ever so much as meeting for coffee. And, really, what is more erotic, more personal, more potentially vulnerable than handwriting on a page? My husband won my heart by sending a witty postcard from a film shoot in Hawaii. No return address, no way for me to respond at all, let alone instantly in three platforms. These days, it seems, the only time we put pen to paper is when someone has died."

What is there to say? MJ's career and talent was absolutely incredible and will be sorely missed. Here is a link to NYMag's post about it.

I am obsessed with my Ray-Ban Clubmasters.

hey there. how's married life treating you?

Charlotte E. Watson

A Ms. Charlotte E. Watson is listed in the Columbia University Class of 2013 registry... Charlotte being Emma Watson's middle name. Sigh. Last I heard, she was going to Brown. I didn't even know that Penn was on the table. Maybe she thinks she'll be more anonymous in the city? But didn't she hear about the mice in student housing? The one-hour wait for a study carrel?? Er, I guess neither of these concerns really apply to her. I recall D. Radcliffe made $25 mil. for the upcoming Harry Potter movie, so she must have earned something at least comparable. So ... no NYC rats for her, I'm guessing. This news figment combines two of my previous posts (one about Emma and another about Columbia) but not in a way I particularly like, haha.

Also, Emma is on the latest cover of Teen Vogue (fresh and lovely) and she's the new face of the Burberry print ad campaign (smo[u]ldering, sophisticated). Really, not bad for 19. Not bad at all.

I love blogs! and food! = food blogs!!

The photos on this food blog are so sharp I feel like I'm there with the food. Boy oh boy, I love food. Linked below are entries by Grace Kang, a fellow blogger at food blog Serious Eats. Ms. Kang also attends Dartmouth College.

http://www.seriouseats.com/user/profile/Grace%20Kang/posts

P.S. I love rainbow cookies!!! I had one today at the reception after my younger sister's graduation from middle school.

P.P.S. http://midtownlunch.com/restaurant-map/ Yesssss! Look what I found via a comment on Grace's blog! Just what I needed. Haven't taken a proper look at it yet, but upon first glace it looks dece.

Fashion Film: Not Too Pretentious!

Cruising the blogs again now that I'm back in classes and stumbled across this little gem:

The 11-year-old son of the filmmaker tries on YSL clothes and is absolutely adorable. For once, as The Cut on NYMag states, we aren't watching some stuck-up montage with angsty (and hungry) models. Children are the perfect way to market nowadays.

Oh, and this is beautiful:

http://www.chanel.com/fashion/8-fashion-trends-a-ballet-for-karl-lagerfeld-0,96#8-fashion-trends-a-ballet-for-karl-lagerfeld-0,96

Ballet is also a wonderful way to market stuff. What woman doesn't want to be a ballerina again as she once wanted to as a little girl? I guess childhood fantasy is exactly what we want in this hard economic time.

Green Key Society reinstates Ball after 42-year hiatus

Link to an article dated 05/15/09 by The Dartmouth about this year's Green Key Ball that I referenced earlier:

http://thedartmouth.com/2009/05/15/greenkey2009/gks

The Uniform Project:

1 dress, 365 days

Starting May 2009, I have pledged to wear one dress for one year as an exercise in sustainable fashion. Here’s how it works: There are 7 identical dresses, one for each day of the week. Every day I will reinvent the dress with layers, accessories and all kinds of accouterments, the majority of which will be vintage, hand-made, or hand-me-down goodies. Think of it as wearing a daily uniform with enough creative license to make it look like I just crawled out of the Marquis de Sade's boudoir.

The Uniform Project is also a year-long fundraiser for the Akanksha Foundation, a grassroots movement that is revolutionizing education in India. At the end of the year, all contributions will go toward Akanksha’s School Project to fund uniforms and other educational expenses for slum children in India.

Is this for reals? As in, do you think she's actually wearing each unique outfit and only that outfit ALL day? What about when she does athletics/works out? She probably changes for that, right? Interesting idea.

natalie portman's shaved head

fyi i have a song on my itunes right now by the band "natalie portman's shaved head". nbd.

I'm pretty sure this is right about when I fell in love with her (and then that SNL skit... girlcrushies). I remember discussing with a girlfriend how Natalie Portman is the kind of girl that other girls respect, admire, like, and emulate, whereas, say... Megan Fox is the kind of girl that boys "like". Or some verb similar to that, but more misogynistic. My guys friends have literally said "Megan Fox is the perfect woman," direct quote, full agreement among all males present. And between all of them, not one could verbalize a reason aside from her obvious beauty. Megan Fox herself mentions in multiple interviews that guys love befriending her because she has "a badass personality," and that girls don't like her because they are jealous of that. I could see her being right about both statements, to an extent. As to the "girls don't like me" part, I could see why, potentially. There's something about her tone, demeanor, self-presentation that seems ... pandering to men. The things she says, the way she poses in photographs, her ubiquitious "sexyface" and unrelenting bedroom eyes... she comes off as very self-sexualizing (if that's a word) with no "artistry" reason behind it, which I think is unattractive or not quite respectable to fellow females. (Not that artisticness is an "excuse," if such a thing is even necessary, although I think it normalizes the behavior and makes it more socially accepted in general and in turn, more accepted among women.)

Case-in-point:

It's not that she takes many, many nearly-nude or lingerie photos. I'm sure Natalie Portman has taken very similar risque photos and I very distinctly recall Keira Knightly taking nearly-topless photos for Chanel ads and fashion spreads. In fact, googling "Natalie Portman nude" produces this as the no. 1 image result:

And we've all seen her pretty much naked in Closer. So what exactly is the difference? Both girls are undeniably beautiful. Why are they in different boxes in my head? Is it that Natalie Portman is a Harvard graduate, and thus obviously intelligent and "automatically" more respectable? Is it that she acts in "better" movies? Do you view them the same way? Are you male or female?

Thoughts?

Agh I totally didn't even mean to write an entry! Have tons on the to-do list!!!

Nifty Nails

So I've decided that this summer, I'm going to refrain from my typical peach/orange tones and return to my childhood nail enamels of BRIGHT pink and Crayola blue. I bought a couple of tiny bottles from Sephora ($4) and they are perfect as little pigment pick-me-ups.

The colors I own are "Hip Hop" (bright magenta) and "Myrtille" which is seen at left.

I've also been introduced to a miracle top coat by Sally Hansen called "Mirror Shine" that makes any nail polish last/have a glossy, clean finish. It also speeds up the drying process so your nails are completely dry in practically 3 minutes. Amazing.

Flora Followup

I remembered that I promised to post photos of the flower arrangements from Green Key Ball. Here are two photos of the smaller arrangement. Spring/happiness captured in a 1' x 1' space.

Colors

My room is being renovated in the coming weeks, and I need to choose a color for the walls. It has been wallpaper (very thin vertical stripes of peachy-pink alternated with white) for a very, very long time, perfectly matched with the peachy-beige carpet that runs throughout my house. I've always liked it but I'm excited for the change. Oh and also I love, love, love interior design. I secretly wish to be an interior designer sometime after my whirlwind 20s, 30s, and 40s, haha.

I'm getting wood floors, so there won't be any conflict of color in that regard. It's not a huge room, so I don't want to get a color that's TOO dense and overwhelming. I'm definitely going with white (slightly creamier/linen) trim -- I'll just match the white I have now on my door frame and window box trims.

In considering a wall color, my favorite color is yellow, and I particularly like the color Mimosa.

It was actually the Pantone-selected color of the year in 2009 ("Mimosa Embodies Hopefulness and Reassurance in a Climate of Change"), but I know I don't just like it because it's trendy. I've long liked the color. But I do worry that it'll be too overwhelming for my room and too "hot"-feeling. And I read on some website that my personality type needs "calming" wall colors. haha.

PITTA - Pitta individuals may develop occasional inflammatory conditions. They have a general tendency to a moderate, athletic frame with a muscular body mass, and a sharp, energetic personality. Cooling therapy may lower a tendency toward irritability. Balance may be derived by colors that cool, moderate, and soothe.

That does sound like me, but I wonder if it's all a crock (ok, very probably), since the other two options -- Vata and Kapha -- also have similar "optimal color suggestions", and since the suggestions for Pitta includes a bright yellow-y color that is VERY similar to Mimosa, which I don't think will be calming...

I also really like a dense, bright blue like Turkish Tile or Ocean Calm, which look a bit like this (these are fabric swatches because color swatch images are hard to come by online) and would probably be more calming:

More the second one than the first, but both are so beautiful. I actually have always loved the combination yellow/blue combination, and I think it's particularly striking to compare these exact blue/yellow colors with each other.

Sigh. Do want. Maybe I can incorporate the Minosa color or a paler yellow some other way into the room. Also, I would LOVE to have a mini-chandelier hanging from ceiling. I think I'll take a look in the thrift store when I drop off donations this weekend -- do they even have lighting fixtures there? Maybe I'll get lucky. Although I kind of wonder what the point in all this is, as I'll be moving out (hopefully, dear Lord) after senior year anyway.

Columbia University Doesn't Care About Their Students, Writes Columbia '09*

A NY Times Opinion article currently spotlights the topic of colleges' cost cutting, with professional and non-professional opinons on what colleges can cut to reduce spending. One voice is Dartmouth's own Victoria Boggiano, my fellow writer/editor for The Dartmouth Daily Newspaper. I can't say I wholly agree with Victoria about cutting the amount of deans, but that's not what caught my blogging interest.

To me, the most fascinating part of this compilation of opinions was the apparent destitution Columbia students live in, to the point where their writer-representative has no suggestions on how to cut costs. Hannah Howard, a 2009 graduate of Columbia College, currently writes a column, “Served,” for Serious Eats where, incidentally, my friend is also working now (she knows her). In reading her Columbia U POV, boy does it sound terrible to go to school there.

See for yourself:
http://roomfordebate.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/06/19/what-colleges-can-cut/

Conclusion: Thank God I didn't go to Columbia.

*Well, that's the gist of her op-ed.

Empire of the Sun

What a range. Listening to "Empire of the Sun" has reminded me how much music artists can play with genre, synth, beat and all-around purpose. From pop hits to avant-garde electro, this band is definitely going to take off as an MGMT successor in popularity. I'm not sure if they will have the same kind of following because of off-kilter singles like "Art of Fighting" and "Delta Bay", but songs like "Half Mast" and their big hit now, "Walking on a Dream" certainly will cater to a crowd looking for easy disco beats. It all kind of reminds me of the fine 1980's film (one of my all-time favorites): The Never Ending Story. Oh, and apparently they're selling their whole image and call themselves "Emperor" and "Lord." WTF. Anyway, visit their website here and see how cracked out they are:
http://www.walkingonadream.com/
Just know that the music holds up to the flamboyant/acid-trip visuals.

THIS IS SO STRANGE but the song is pretty good

Cookies Gone Bad

On top of their depression from break ups and unemployment, women are having to deal with salmonella from eating too much raw Toll House cookie dough!!!!!!!

I guess my 1/2-tube binges will have to stop.

Apparently, they've recalled all the cookie dough because of salmonella detection. Looks like we'll be baking from scratch again. It's better like that anyway. PS: It's never a good idea to eat that much raw egg. Obviously people would get sick. But yeah, salmonella is pretty unfortunate. I guess we stilll have to blame the evil cookie monster corporation of Nestle instead of laughing at stupid consumers.

Why are they listing Valentine's Day cookies? Wasn't that, like, 4 months ago? Hmmm....

PS: A tub of chocolate chip cookie dough sounds like a dream.

HJNTIY

I watched He's Just Not That Into You on demand last night with a friend and I do have to say that I am largely disappointed. And I was kind of excited to watch it too!

Aside from a weak plot line, the "stars" in the movie really didn't do anything for me - Jennifer Connolly, perpetually dressed in the most unflattering clothes possible, was a waste of a strong actress, Scarlett Johansson was the exact same character that she is in Vicky Cristina Barcelona (beguiling, youthful, sensual, naive, seductress in search of her life path), I couldn't get past the shadow of the "Rachel" persona when watching Jennifer Aniston (and I hate that they cast her as the "beautiful, smart, hot older woman who can't secure a man" -- is that on purpose? Why does she keep taking these roles?), Ben Affleck looked strangely gaunt and was dry as crisps, and Ginnifer Goodwin was so achingly, overly but at the same time accurately and relatably en pointe in her portrayal of the sweet, desperate, pathetic single girl that it may have detracted from the enjoyment of the movie. I couldn't help yelling at the screen ("No! Don't call him! What are you doing?"). The characters and plot development were bad enough that I honestly cannot recall any of their names now and I don't think I even bothered to learn them during the movie. BUT Justin Long was a positive as a fresh face and perhaps the highlight of the movie, along with Bradley Cooper -- but that one may be because I'm still hung up on his character in The Hangover.

Additionally, the dressing for the movie was terrible. Boring bordering on ugly. Overall, I thought the movie would be better. I guess, considering the lineup of stars, I had high expectations?

On the plus side though, my [male] friend said it was better than he expected. Go figure.

P.S. Oh yeah and I completely forgot to mention Drew Barrymore -- I'd say that's pretty indicative of her performance and character in the movie. It seems like the writers/producers (she is one of the co-producers, ironically) threw her character in to make useless, pithy comments about the evolution of dating etiquette due to technology -- presumably for some humor value.

P.P.S. Also, the movie was completely hypocritical in its message, alternately showing how men were just not that into the women but then also providing nearly each woman with her own neat happy ending. The whole Ginnifer Goodwin plotline ended with her being the "exception" to the rule of HJNTIY, which is: if he doesn't initiate contact or pursue you, forget it. He's just not that into you and will never call. But what does that mean for everyone else? Should one abide by HJNTIY rules or do as Ginnifer Goodwin does and hope to be the exception? Ridiculous and confusing.

Oof [Calvin Klein]

So I know the blog has run a little shoe-heavy (pun unintended) recently, but how perfect are these heels? This is so Calvin Klein. Now they're not the sexiest or hottest or most creative or mind-blowing heels I've ever seen, mind you. They're just an excellent example of when Calvin Klein do what they do best - simple, minimalistic, excellent material and shape, high quality and wear-ability. I see this being a good investment shoe - thick, stacked heel, most versatile color, and moderate enough for most events. And they're not even that expensive at way less than $100, on sale now at piperlime.com. Yay!
