Another amazing song entitled Kids (by Sleigh Bells)
I am seriously blowing out my eardrums listening to this... I can't wait to run to this song later on. Right about :53 to 1:05 is so sick.
The entire Treats album is awesome so far!!

Anyone else want to plunge into the rich history/current state of German electronica?

Zero--Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Going through a Yeah Yeah Yeahs phase right now. Y'all have probably been there and done that, but whatever. "Heads Will Roll" is obviously awesome, but I love this song too.
I've liked this song for a long time, too.

From The Cut:
She cites Michael Jackson, Prince, David Bowie, and Tilda Swinton as her style inspirations.
“I don’t want to be a man,” she says. “I very much enjoy being a woman — I love my body, and the sexiness of being a woman — but I like men’s clothes.”
Oh yes, those influences come through very clearly. Especially Tilda Swinton, they look hella similar.
“I am pretty ready to get rid of the hair, but I am kind of attached to it,” she says. “At the same time, I am kind of fed up with talking about it.”
It's such good hair! But I would be interested in seeing what would be next...
AND: SHE'S ONLY 22!! Ahh, makes me want to be a star too.
FM Belfast
Thanks to someone I'll call J, I've been listening to the Icelandic band FM Belfast. Kind of a poppier, happier version of The Knife, FM Belfast uses 80's inspiration for its techno beats and playful lyrics.
Here are my two faves now:
This is for you, J!

The Notorious XX
I've been going through a Biggie phase lately, and this makes me very happy. Some mashups are just genius, and this combo is one of them. Download/enjoy the XX/Biggie album here.

No Doubt
I'm going through a neo-90's phase. While I'm not listening to Biggie Smalls, I'm listening to No Doubt. Whaaaaat?
This is super random (but foreshadowing for all that Harajuku stuff?):
This one is almost good but kinda literal...esp. with the part with the reference to silent film...But I love Gwen and this song and the 8 1/2 references. I'd give the video a B.

NPR Music
While I love downloading albums, I hate paying money! So I've recently discovered that NPR has a free SXSW sampler, which is pretty great...I'm in the process of downloading it now, and am finding that NPR music is a pretty sweet site. Why I haven't browsed it sooner for music news, I have no clue (maybe because I'm too busy with school and reliant on the very Williamsburg-limited NYMag?), but I'm happy to have found it now.
Visit here:

Now I'm about to listen to Spoon & Broken Bells (who played their entire new album) live at SXSW.
Apparently, the coverage for SXSW on NPR is sponsored by PBR. Hah.

Here's Spoon's set list:
* Written In Reverse
* Someone Something
* Don't Make Me A Target
* The Ghost Of You Lingers
* Trouble Comes Running
* Nobody Gets Me But You
* Don't You Evah
* Love Song [The Damned cover]
* Out Go The Lights
* The Underdog
* Vittorio E.
* Got Nuffin'
* I Turn My Camera On
* My Mathematical Mind
* I Summon You
* Black Like Me
* Is Love Forever?
* Rhthm & Soul
* Finer Feelings
Interesting...when I saw them they also played Jonathon Fisk and didn't play a lot of these. Always great. I haven't really listened to Transference yet, but I will...tonight...
And now I'm going to dig into some of the new albums they have streaming online, including The White Stripes. This is so addicting...

Animal
I'm obsessed with this song right now. How have I never heard this before? I feel weird. Am I obsessed with music? And fashion? I also don't want to listen to more songs by Miike Snow because what if they're not as good as this song?
There was a time when my world was filled with darkness, darkness, darkness
And I stopped dreaming now I'm supposed to fill it up with something, something , something
In your eyes I see the eyes of somebody I knew before long long long ago
But I'm still trying to make my mind up
Am I free or am I tied up
I change shapes just to hide in this place but I'm still, I'm still an animal
Nobody knows it but me when I slip yeah I slip
I'm still an animal
There is a hole and I tried to fill it up with money, money , money
But it gets bigger to your hopes is always
Running, running, running
In your eyes I see the eyes of somebody who could be strong
Tell me if I'm wrong
And now I'm pulling your disguise up
Or you free or are you tied up
I change shapes just to hide in this place but I'm still I'm still an animal
Nobody knows it but me when I slip
I'm still an animal
I change shapes just to hide in this place but I'm still I'm still an animal
Nobody knows it but me when I slip yeah I slip
I'm still an animal
I change shapes just to hide in this place but I'm still I'm still an animal
Nobody knows it but me when I slip yeah I slip
I'm still an animal x2

Gorillaz: Plastic Beach

New album is mad good. My favorite song right now is "Rhinestone Eyes." I'm digging into all the other songs, but this is the first that jumped out to me (though "Welcome to the World Of The Plastic Beach" is pretty badass with the Snoop track). Love the mixing of genres; got some inspiration from 80's pop, modern rap, electronica and spoken word. Genius in general. Can't wait to get more into it when I'm done with finals.
Other songs I love: "Superfast Jellyfish" (Parliament-esque) and "White Flag" (so freaking cool in its combination of rap and an almost video game style electro track and then framed in a fanciful eastern style instrumental track). The tracks are all so intricate and creative--seriously, genius.
Love the artwork/animation for Gorillaz. Fascinating. Need to work on my drawing skills so maybe I could make similar videos. Cool website, too.

Coachella: Wish I were there
WISHICOULDGOwishicouldgoWISHICOULDGO
"The 5th edition of the Osheaga Music and Arts Festival will kick off with Osheaga in the City from July 28th to July 30th and move to the beautiful Parc Jean-Drapeau for the July 31st-August 1st weekend!"
Maybe Osheaga (Montreal) 2010? Errrrr but I'll be in training then so ... derno.
Done
Over the past week, I've grown increasingly obsessed with Yes Giantess. I can't wait for their album!
P.S. Turns out they're toured with both Little Boots and La Roux (and do covers of both artists)... do I know what I like or do I know what I like? haha.

Yes Giantess, Surfer Blood
I watched Yes Giantess play at Dartmouth a few weeks ago and they are great live performers -- so fun to watch/listen/dance to, and their music achieves that rare combination of being catchy, with some depth. After their show, I'm a fan. :)
Last night at another concert, my friend and I were chatting with JP and Jonas, the lead singers of Surfer Blood and Turbo Fruits, respectively, and we realized afterward how difficult it must be to make it as a band; both JP and Jonas said they never went to college (well, JP went to one year of Palm Beach Community College...) and have basically been touring/trying to make it big since high school. And Surfer Blood is good, too, so we were wondering: Why aren't these bands well known (yet)? We concluded that there must be an element of luck to it.
Anyway, I thought Surfer Blood was breezy yet energetic and easy to listen to, Turbo Fruits had some interesting ideas but mostly hurt my ears - they need a keyboardist or something to modulate the harshness of their sound. They were largely unpleasant to listen to, but I did appreciate Jonas's flannel shirt. It was similar to one I bought my younger sister this Christmas.

Julian Casablancas
This song is sooooo goooooood. Homage to George Harrison? I think so. Putting JC on the must-see concert list (1) Radiohead (2)Of Montreal (3)Julian Casablancas...
this entire album is great.

Cold Cave
Listening to "Life Magazine" lately...hadn't seen the video til I decided to post...gives the song a different dimension. Really interesting stuff. Need to digest it for a bit. First impressions: like the exposure, concept, question of beauty, religion, sex...homage to madonna/marilyn and vintage beauties...it isn't too cliche, though, is it? I guess the song is called "Life Magazine", after all. It also seemed to allude to Mulholland Drive when the drag queen is dancing with the red gloves...kind of reminded me of the blue haired woman and all that exaggerated makeup/costume action. But maybe I'm giving the video too much cred. It's just refreshing to watch something a little confusing...especially when I'm taking a break from writing a research paper on Ed Sullivan and music television history, "liveness", and "televisuality".
This song's okay...very 80s/New Order/Cut Copy/The Knife/Ladytron...not very original. "Life Magazine" is much better.
