I'm SO excited for "Public Enemies" to come out on July 1. Perfect summer blockbuster: 3 big stars, lots of gun violence and escapism (The Dark Knight, anyone?)
Anyway, I'm hoping it's like a nouveau-Bonnie & Clyde, allowing the spectator to indulge in the crimes Depp commits as Dillinger. We almost root for the bad guy, but in the end know that crime can't succeed.
Instead of playing into the art cinema tendencies of the late 60's, I'll bet that "Public Enemies" caters to "The Dark Knight" audience because filmmakers are playing it safe--but let's hope that the addition of Marion Cotillard gives the film more backbone than Maggie Gyllenhaal ever did in DK. Oh, and Christian Bale's southern accent better not be as painful as his Batman voice was. I think I'm one of the few people who didn't like DK...the only saving grace for that film was Heath Ledger--everyone can agree that he had a great performance. There's no doubt that Depp will be just as good, or even better, than Ledger was.
Anyway, I'm hoping this film isn't just a bunch of shooting and actually has something important to say! Yay for summer movies!
