Peter Pan

Many college guys don't know how to act like adults. They live on a closed campus, food and housing provided, where they can frolick in the grass, climb trees, drink til they puke, and pretty much lead a life without any real responsibility.

As the school year ends, seniors are going to have to realize that they need to take care of themselves. They're going on the final abroad program, where friends aren't always there in their dorms waiting to "hang out," and you need to take a cab home at night (maybe).

But what about those men who can't let go? The ones whose aspirations are to remain in childhood, thiking they're "special" and live life thinking only about themselves? There's a point at which children's brains develop to consider others in their lives, a transition from a selfish perspective to a compassionate and accountable one. They realize that they should treat people the way they wanted to be treated, with respect and support.

Someone I know recently exposed a popular name for the man who can't leave his childhood; it's Peter Pan syndrome

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puer_Aeternus

The man only cares about himself. I don't understand how anybody could get by in this world thinking that way--you'd hurt too many people. So effing stupid.

Feminism

I'm writing a paper about film and second wave feminism, so I took a few books out of the library. One was entitled "Does Feminism Discriminate Against Men?"

Here are some gems.
p. 4: “Expressing feelings of vulnerability brings women affection and men rejection."

p. 47
“When a woman touches a man on his rear, he’s likely to say, ‘thank you’; when a man touches a woman on her rear, she’s more likely to say ‘sue you.’

“Why this difference? He’s always had to work for sex, pay for sex, risk rejection for sex, perform for sex—so what he gets for no work, pay, rejection, or performing creates gratitude: He says ‘thank you.’ She’s had men pay for drinks and dinners before they even asked for sex, so when he takes it without asking and without paying, she’s more likely to say ‘sue you.’"

I hope you enjoyed that. There's even more where that came from.

Word of the moment

Why the hell is everyone using the word "egregious" nowadays? It's the new "surreal."

-"My egregious behavior"

-"My egregious blitz"

-"My egregious choice"

COURTESY of the most respected of dictionaries, dictionary.com:

e⋅gre⋅gious

1.
extraordinary in some bad way; glaring; flagrant: an egregious mistake; an egregious liar.
2.
Archaic. distinguished or eminent.
e⋅gre⋅gious⋅ly, adverb
e⋅gre⋅gious⋅ness, noun
Synonyms:1. gross, outrageous, notorious.

Is the reason why we're using this word this term because we've just been bad? Or are we simply trying to sound smart to preserve dignity after making a false comment?

Why are we so terribly wrong all the time this season?

If our previously trendy word was "surreal," and now we're at "egregious," what's next?

Presumptuous reader comment

And yet another comment! This one thinks he knows me or something. tsk tsk.

The loss of Christian Lacroix to Paris haute couture is immeasurable. Although the designer hopes to hold a small presentation during the July couture season, this was the last house established under the formal couture rules. Even a restructuring would likely have severe implications on his 125-member staff.

wow

i wonder if lacroix pieces will appreciate now haha

OR if they'll disappear into oblivion like many many other brands

Lust, Caution, Wang

Want to watch this movie ASAP - Wang Lee Hom, Ang Lee, Tang Wei pictured Dec 8, 2007

um...

He reminds me of a Chinese-American Ashton Kutcher, but a million times more talented and significant - he's sold over 15 million records, is very passionate about the environment, and has hugely changed Chinese music. Ashton also does Nikon ads and used to be a model. I don't think Wang Lee Hom was, but clearly he has it in him.

Wow look at that hair... Jared, your mom needs to give you this haircut.

Women Directors

I'm studying film from 1960-present and am currently focusing on the 60's and 70's for a research paper.
Anyone who's studied cinema can name-drop the movie brats, the guys who all went to film school at around the same time and revamped the studios in America during the late 60's/early 70's: Coppola, Scorsese, Lucas, Spielberg...the list goes on.

What's notable is that it was a boy's club. The guys made movies about male fantasies, but there really wasn't a counterpoint of women directors who were able to make films about women's goals and aspirations. They existed in Europe, particularly in Germany, but why not in America?

This discrepancy continues today: just try and name 1 female filmmaker. Other than Coppola.

Am I right, or am I right? You probably can't name more than 3. Maybe.

What is it about America that makes women directors not as famous? Is it there a lack of female interest in the field, or do their films just fail? Is it a feminist issue?

Encapsulated without enrapture

http://www.target.com/b/ref=in_br_display-ladders/182-5279963-5894852?ie=UTF8&node=16275561

In theory, I love these capsule collections for Target - a Botkier-designed bag for $50? Uh YES PLEASE, that sounds a hell of a lot better than $500. I was actually both excited and a bit miffed when Target introduced their Botkier collection a while after I made what I consider an investment purchase, for this very reason. But then again, why don't I own a single item from any of these Target GO International collections when they seem to be targeted exactly at my age group and level of purchasing power?

"Target delivers designer style at guilt-free prices," the website boasts, continuing: "Tracy Feith for Target starting at $14.99"

I find it the absolute opposite, actually. Obviously most pieces run closer to $30 or $40 for a top or skirt, respectively, and that doesn't feel quite so guilt-free to me. In fact, I'd much rather splurge on one beautiful piece from the actual label than buy five or so of these capsule collection pieces.

Am I glad that these options are now available to th
e masses? (Seriously, it's called mass/fast fashion, I'm not just displaying some strange form of fashion elitism.) Yes. Yes, I'm glad. Grateful, even.

I just feel like these fit in a rather awkward price and appeal window. Every time I go to a Target, I think I'll be enticed to buy a piece from one of these collections, but as I finger the material or turn over the shoe, I'm always put off either by the quality or something will be just off about the piece - maybe it's the price, or maybe it's the (lack of) shopping experience. I just feel as if it's never cheap enough to buy off-the-cuff nor special enough to be a meaningful purchase. So there is no level of satisfaction on either "scoring a deal" or the excitement from having bought a beautiful piece of fashion.

To reference the aforementioned case study of the Botkier collection:

Sneak Peek! Botkier for Target
Botkier for Target handbags are right around the corner and we've got 'em for your viewing pleasure. These bags — priced $20-$50 — will be at select Target stores and at Target.com July 20 through September 14. The line includes clutches, wristlets, satchels and hobos that encompass the designer’s philosophy of using hardware as the “jewelry” of the handbag. [fabsugar.com]
Staying true to her aesthetic, Monica's bags for Target are both modern and functional or as the designer says "a mix of luxury and utility with a downtown edge. It is for the chic, modern woman - it features rich textures and luxe metallics, combining my signature use of hardware as the jewelry of a handbag while still keeping a focus on functionality." [stylelist.com]

While I was at first very excited to buy a cute little Botkier for Target clutch when I read these reviews, the excitement quickly wore off when I fully realized what I'd be getting for my $20- $50: just a taste of her design aesthetic without any of the high quality I'd come to expect. Disappointing. I'd rather just buy a cute piece as cheap as I can from say, forever21 than spend my hard-earned $20 - $50 on a similarly low-quality piece.

"Popularity" unpopular popularity study

No Revenge of the Nerds? The wages of popularity

By Adam Sternbergh

Published May 10, 2009

I think this study's researcher-developed instrument incorrectly defines the "popularity quotient" they base the entire premise of the study on; the authors ask members of a class of '57 former high schoolers to list their three best friends from high school and the authors then code the members who were listed the highest as the most popular. That's not how it worked back when I was in high school - those are just people with a lot of close friends, or rather, genuinely popular - and that was NOT the measure of popularity in my high school. How aboout yours?

Many commemoration activities are being held to mark the first anniversary of the devastating earthquake which struck Sichuan Province on May 12, 2008, claiming nearly 90,000 lives. Over 680 reconstruction projects, ranging from infrastructure to cultural and tourism sectors, are underway to rebuild the quake-stricken areas, requiring a total investment of around 248 billion US dollars. Greenery, Flora, Ball

I just chose out the flower arrangements for the Green Key Ball this past Saturday and they are incredibly beautiful, if I do say so myself. I can't wait to see it in person. It's a bright almost fluorescent green plus rich, luxe purple, pink, yellow, and white. It's a very fresh spring look to me that's neither blatantly cool nor warm but rather a balance between the two with a very chic, refined yet young, modern, slightly unexpected look to it.

Here are some of the components:

This
article below from the WSJ is so timely! It even mentions the bright colors and bright greens.

Of course, there are filler flowers in between all of these huge attention-gathering flowers. And it's a more draping, long horizontal arrangement as opposed to those very tall ones. I will post a photos of it when we pick up the arrangements.

Choosing a New Flower Czar

The longtime chief florist retires as White House tastes take a modern turn

Washington

Nancy Clarke, the longtime chief florist at the White House, plans to retire May 29, but not before she helps Michelle Obama incorporate her personal style into official floral designs.

Flower arranging at the White House has taken a more modern turn since the Obamas moved in, Ms. Clarke says. "They are more youthful...so we gear things a little bit younger. A lot more color, brighter colors, happier colors," she says.

A White House Floral History

In the Obama White House, clear glass cylinder vases hold sparse displays of white orchids or dogwood branches (Mrs. Obama "likes a lot of branches," Ms. Clarke says), while classic porcelain urns are filled with more structured arrangements. Glass cylinders of hot pink tulips and purple anemones were placed in Sasha's and Malia's bedrooms right after the family moved in.

...

But the Obamas' edgier tastes are welcome news to others, who say White House flowers could use an update. Tina Stoecker, president-elect of the American Institute of Floral Designers, says she hopes to see more loosely arranged designs, using bright greens and Fuji chrysanthemums, to replace the traditional floral structures. "It's always been ostentatious masses of flowers," Ms. Stoecker says.

"It's time to shake things up a bit," says New York designer David Beahm, who helped with White House events during the Clinton Administration. He envisions bright, symmetrical designs of locally-grown flowers arranged in some of the antique vases in the White House collection.

But

I've always wanted to smell like convict... music...

I'm so sick of...

Celebrity fragrances. Some are good--I admit, I'm a proud owner of Britney Spears "Curious," but come on now, Akon is making two fragrances for the fall. It's OVERDONE. I remember walking into the Bloomingdale's fragrance section looking for a Van Cleef & Arpels fragrance, "Faerie," but the saleswoman thought I was asking for "one of those celebrity perfumes? We don't sell those here."

Fragrances were originally introduced as a cheaper way for consumers to buy into the luxury lifestyle--a bottle of Chanel, a spritz of Dior. Now, celebrities are using them, perhaps thinking that consumers would like to buy into their lifestyles.

I buy what I think smells good, hence my collection ranging from Britney to Guerlain. But there are just some things I don't agree with, and that's a fragrance from Akon. Really? REALLY?

Fences

a play by August Wilson
Winner of the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for Drama

some excerpts that resonated with me:

_______

Lyons, Troy's 34-year old musician son, asks to borrow $10 (again). Troy works as a garbage collector and chastises Lyons for not having a real job.

TROY: I told you I know some people down there. I can get you on the rubbish if you want to work. I told you that the last time you came by here asking me for something.
LYONS: Naw, Pop... thanks. That ain't for me. I don't wanna be carrying nobody's rubbish. I don't wanna be punching nobody's time clock.
TROY: What's the matter, you too good to carry people's rubbish? Where you think that ten dollars you talking about come from? I'm just supposed to haul people's rubbish and give my money to you cause you too lazy to work. You too lazy to work and wanna know why you ain't got what I got.
...
LYONS: You and me is two different people, Pop.

_____

Cory, Troy's second seventeen-year-old son, struggles against Troy to continue to play football and potentially get recruited for college while Troy, who loves baseball but was never able to play professionally before the Jackie Robinson era, insists that Cory quit football to continue working at the A&P.

CORY: How come you ain't never liked me?
...
TROY: Like you? I go out of here every morning... bust my butt... putting up with them crackers every day... cause I like you? You about the biggest fool I ever saw.
(Pause.)
It's my job. It's my responsibility! You understand that? A man got to take care of his family. You live in my house... sleep you behind on my bedclothes... fill you belly up with my food... cause you my son. You my flesh and blood. Not 'cause I like you! Cause it's my duty to take care of you. I owe a responsibility to you! Let's get this straight right here... before it go along any further... I ain't got to like you. Mr. Rand don't give me my money come payday cause he likes me. He give me cause he owe me. I done give you everything I had to give you. I gave you your life! Me and your mama worked that out between us. And liking your black ass wasn't part of the bargain. Don't you try and go through life worrying about if somebody like you or not. You best be making sure they doing right by you. You understand what I'm saying, boy?
CORY: Yessir.
TROY: Then get the hell out of my face, and get on down to that A&P.

____

Rose, Troy's second wife and mother of Cory, after overhearing the previous conversation:

ROSE: Times have changed from when you was young, Troy. People change. The world's changing around you and you can't even see it.
TROY: (
Slow, methodical.) Woman... I do the best I can do. I come in here every Friday. I carry a sack of potatoes and a bucket of lard. You all line up at the door with your hands out. I give you the lint from my pockets. I give you my sweat and my blood. I ain't got no tears. I done spent them. We go upstairs in that room at night... and I fall down on you and try to blast a hole into forever. I get up Monday morning... find my lunch on the table. I go out. I make my way. Find my strength to carry me through to the next Friday.
(Pause.)
That's all I got, Rose. That's all I got to give. I can't give nothing else.

____

Troy drunkenly confronts Cory for trying to walk around him on the steps of the porch without saying "Excuse me."

TROY: You just gonna walk over top of me?
CORY: I live here too!
TROY: (Advancing toward him.) You just gonna walk over top of me in my own house?
CORY: I ain't scared of you.
...
CORY: I ain't got to say excuse me to you. You don't count around here no more.
TROY: Oh, I see... I don't count around here no more. You ain't got to say excuse me to your daddy. All of a sudden you done got so grown that your daddy don't count around here no more... Around here in his own house and yard that he done paid for with the sweat of his brow. You done got so grown to where you gonna take over. You gonna take over my house. Is that right? ...

___
_

Seven years later, Cory returns on the date of Troy's funeral. He is a Corporal in the Marines.

ROSE: You just like him. You got him in you good.
CORY: Don't tell me that, Mama.
ROSE: You Troy Maxson all over again.
CORY: I don't want to be Troy Maxson. I want to be me.

___

Did Cory ever go to College?

A million little things, six degrees of separation

"A painting revolves slowly high over the stage..."

I just read "Six Degrees of Separation", a play by John Guare and it sounds like a fascinating play to cast. I really want to watch this live, I bet it would be very powerful. I kind of can't wait to hear why Professor Pease has to say about it. I love feeling really engaged in a class. I wish there were someone in my class I could talk to about this play... ironic because this is the biggest class I've ever been in... ahh the perils of a gut class.

It would be SO fun and cerebral to cast a play and direct it and be in it - a serious, profound play. Especially this play, and even more especially the role of Paul. According to Google Images, Will Smith was cast in a movie version as Paul. I don't see that as quite right. He has too much of a soft charm to him, his face is too open and young looking (even now), and the play so emphasizes the character's blackness and black background that I see him cast as a very dark black person.

Reminds me of:Obviously not this level of raw sex and muscularness, but I see Paul as a really beautiful creature with obvious good looks - not kindly good looks like young Will Smith.

Some other castings I found on Google Images:

Ugh this one looks all wrong. Paul, Ouisa, Flan - everything. Not right on any of them. And Ouisa would never wear a dress that made her breasts look like that. And Flan would never, never wear a tackly double-breasted jacked with ugly tie. How about another:

Also all wrong! Maybe I'm thinking of a modern iteration, but Paul would never wear that and Paul and Ouisa ar both too young looking and Ouisa's face is too round and lacks the sharpness of age.

Another:

This one looks a bit closer.... Paul wouldn't have facial hair or long hair like that though. He knows better, he's too careful to do that. And I imagine Flan to be a bit more powerful-looking. And Ouisa looks a bit too old.

Sigh. lol.

Also, another beautiful photo from the recent Gisele shoot... the limbs, the muscle tone, the effortlessness and naturalness of his holding her and her just nearly floating. Reminds me of Alvin Ailey dance company. A very dancer-like photo, I think.

haha and to follow up on F's recent post: I love onesies! Now I just need to get one. I feel like it's probably hard to find the right one. Also - high-waisted onesies: darling or dangerous? The one to the left may not be the BEST example, it looks rather awkward even on this pin-thin model

This item below is fucking adorable... but not really class-appropriate now, is it. Perhaps with a little denim jacket thrown over it?

And well, while we're at it - why not - look at a piece I just bought recently (in navy)! I can't wait for it to get hereeee

Onesies

Oh, hey there, onesie.

perfect for playing in a sandbox...

Since when did onesies become so prevalent that they get their own SECTION in women's apparel? Are we all reverting back to childhood, when we wore skisuit onesies, pajama onesies, and well, EVERYTHING onesie because we weren't coordinated enough to choose a shirt AND, dare I say it, pants?

I don't mind them--it's hard to pull them off, but if you wear a pair of kitten heels and a serious 'tude, you might get by...

As long as you don't wear the Arden B. or Bebe ones, you might not look like a lady of the night.

2004

CSS
Looking through my iTunes, I realized that 2004-2005 was the year of the hipster ra-ra band. You know what I mean--The Go! Team, The Sounds, Shout Out Louds, CSS...

the sounds
They all have that childish, school sound that can be fun and pump you up, but at the same time it can be really annoying. Too much American Apparel.
I will admit to a huge Shout Out Louds phase sophomore year of high school (right during the OC years...TV shows just don't have the same soundtracks anymore).

The question here is why, during these years, this sound became so popular? What was the social context? Did we feel like we needed to revert back to a young, computery sound because, well, young adults at the time were living sheltered lives?

What do you think?

Swine Flu

I know we're a little behind the curve of the whole swine flu craze, but here's an idea I've been meaning to share (I know I'm not the only one to have come up with this). A way to jumpstart consumerism during this time of economic strife is to make designer FACEMASKS.

NYMag and the Times have both come to this conclusion as well. See below!

Ew this is horrid. This reader needs to read the blog a bit more carefully. Although -- how timely! I'm going golfing on Friday with Women in Business at the Hanover Country Club. I will keep this in mind as to what not to wear.

So ever since I ordered those flowers online, I really like flower arrangements now. Well, I sort of always have, but yeah. This one is really pretty and simple and the colors are very chic in a pale, reserved way. Of course, this stuff reminds me of weddings haha.

song that goes along with this post/I'm listening to now (how can I add this?):
