Hipsters

I hate hipsters, but unfortunately claim a few of them as my friends.

I like to think of myself as someone who listens to the music and watches the films, but isn't willing to sacrifice showers and soap to be counterculturalist. I'm just so square I guess.

Isn't it funny when being alternative is mainstream? Pretending not to care what people think inherently means you really do care, doesn't it? Oh, the youth these days...what I wouldn't give for some hippie circle dancing on the Green or something right about now. Instead, look at what NYU and Williamsburg have given us:

Read it. You'll see why I laugh as I put off studying the French New Wave and Godard while listening to Panda Bear on full blast and sipping a nice can of PBR.

2004

CSS

Looking through my iTunes, I realized that 2004-2005 was the year of the hipster ra-ra band. You know what I mean--The Go! Team, The Sounds, Shout Out Louds, CSS...

They all have that childish, school sound that can be fun and pump you up, but at the same time it can be really annoying. Too much American Apparel.
I will admit to a huge Shout Out Louds phase sophomore year of high school (right during the OC years...TV shows just don't have the same soundtracks anymore).


The question here is why, during these years, this sound became so popular? What was the social context? Did we feel like we needed to revert back to a young, computery sound because, well, young adults at the time were living sheltered lives?
