(A)typical Chinese tourist(s)

I love this photo from a NYT slideshow about Hainan, an island that I'm traveling to this summer. It's called the "Hawaii of China" I'm so excited!

"Look around and you'll encounter weekend warriors from Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Guangzhou, all seeking to escape the crush of big-city life for a stretch of beach."
Photo: Christie Johnston for The New York Times

Haha an all-Hawaiian t-shirt print outfit with pink Crocs and an umbrella to shade from the sun... and the grandma taking a photo of the photographer! I love it.

Public Enemies--The Dark Knight of 2009?

looking good

I'm SO excited for "Public Enemies" to come out on July 1. Perfect summer blockbuster: 3 big stars, lots of gun violence and escapism (The Dark Knight, anyone?)

Anyway, I'm hoping it's like a nouveau-Bonnie & Clyde, allowing the spectator to indulge in the crimes Depp commits as Dillinger. We almost root for the bad guy, but in the end know that crime can't succeed.

Instead of playing into the art cinema tendencies of the late 60's, I'll bet that "Public Enemies" caters to "The Dark Knight" audience because filmmakers are playing it safe--but let's hope that the addition of Marion Cotillard gives the film more backbone than Maggie Gyllenhaal ever did in DK. Oh, and Christian Bale's southern accent better not be as painful as his Batman voice was. I think I'm one of the few people who didn't like DK...the only saving grace for that film was Heath Ledger--everyone can agree that he had a great performance. There's no doubt that Depp will be just as good, or even better, than Ledger was.

Anyway, I'm hoping this film isn't just a bunch of shooting and actually has something important to say! Yay for summer movies!

The Hangover

It's funny that Georgina mentioned this movie because I also just saw it on Monday, but in Boston and paid $9...
that's the student price. Oh, cities.
Anyway, I agree that it was very funny. Great way to kick off summer, especially with the MTV playlist they used as music--Rihanna, Usher, the works. Not really that much for me to say about it other than it was funny when I saw it, funny right when I walked home and easily forgettable, save for the Mike Tyson cameo and Rain Man throwback.

I read a Rolling Stone article whose goal was to pick out which of the 3 bros you'd want most want to go to Vegas with. My opinion? None of the 3--I'd take the groom! Oh, and I wouldn't go to Vegas. I'd prefer the Napa Valley B&B.

The movie I really want to see is the new Woody Allen/Larry David flick "Whatever Works"...don't know much about it, but I need some Jewish humor to balance out all this bromedy I've been soaking up.

Little Boots New Album

Little Boots' new LP "Hands" leaked onto the internet two days ago and it's spread like the plague across the blogosphere (I guess it landed here, too). Definitely a combination of Annie, Kylie Minogue and Yelle in its combination of pop/disco/80's/chick music. Nothing wrong with that! Bubble gum has its place. The thing with Little Boots is there's a little bit of depth to it--it sounds like bubble gum but has some bitterness to it.

Download the single "Remedy". Perfect to play at a summer dance party. You'll see what I mean.

Osheaga

This is my goal of the summer:

http://www.osheaga.com/2009/en/bands

I need to go to more concerts, so I figure this packs in a bunch of bands! Esp. Crystal Castles, Lykke Li and Girl Talk.

Oh, and who wouldn't want to see the Beastie Boys?

Onesies

Oh, hey there, onesie.

perfect for playing in a sandbox...

Since when did onesies become so prevalent that they get their own SECTION in women's apparel? Are we all reverting back to childhood, when we wore skisuit onesies, pajama onesies, and well, EVERYTHING onesie because we weren't coordinated enough to choose a shirt AND, dare I say it, pants?

I don't mind them--it's hard to pull them off, but if you wear a pair of kitten heels and a serious 'tude, you might get by...

As long as you don't wear the Arden B. or Bebe ones, you might not look like a lady of the night.

arden b.: ewwwwwwwww
