So I've gone through the album and...
First thoughts:
1. Overall, sounds like a less dynamic continuation of the last album. For some reason it doesn't have the same spark -- I miss the predominance of that effervescent bongo/drums sound. I really liked Horchata when it was released as a single/preview, but the rest of the songs blend into each other quite a bit. They sound more produced and pop-y and pale in comparison to the originals. There's more mellowness and slow songs, which I don't think is their strong point but I'll probably grow to like it because I do like the band itself.
2. Who is this girl on the cover? What does she have to do with any of the music on the album???
3. The last few songs on the album are better than the first few. I like their last song 'White Sky' a lot upon first listen. Maybe because it sounds like it's cut from the first album haha. And because the song features prominently that lovely head voice yodeling they do so well.
4. Pleasant to listen to with some very good songs but overall not as amazing as the first album. A bit disappointing, to be honest. Still good though. And I'm happy when I listen to (new) music by them and in my book that is an overall win.
Her name is "Kirtsten" after reading the page source of http://vampireweekend.com/images/ and finding the "kirtsten.jpg"
ReplyDeletethat web link doesnt work!
ReplyDeletebut im gonna go have a listen. vampire weekend is so EHH, you know? like a good summer band for some reason. or maybe that rule just applies to me. i like cat power, feist, fiona [and sometimes sugar ray and no doubt] this season. that girl is pretty. i just want to know if they made this gesture to help promote her modeling carreer.
by teh way, great entry. in my visuality and modern art class, sadly my only [fine] art history course this semester would have us excersice a 20 minute visual analysis. this was as mealy and descriptive as any on point painting analysis. just for fun, you should do some on art exhibitions you see. the NY times has a column "Art in Review",which thankfully archives newly exposed work in various gallery locations sprinkled throughout NYC. when you are in New York again (sadly in a few months, right?) lets do a hunt and you have to HAVE to write about your favorite and LEAST favorite. annnnnnnnd you'll probably never have time to do this. but on a day off of work this spring or summer, you cannot resist!
joking. the link did work. i mistakenly copied and pasted all the text from the previous comment into my web url thing
