Urban Outfitters Now Sells Fixed Gear Bikes
No shit... guess this means everyone knows about fixies now. These bikes are pretty cool, I must admit -- there's only one (fixed?) chain, so when you pedal backwards, the bike goes backwards. And you can ride on one wheel, control everything about the bike. Similar to a stick-shift car, I'd imagine. That's about the extent of my knowledge though, and I basically dated one for about a month. Pictured above is a rather cool-looking fixie -- Nike-commissioned in '08 for a celebration of their Air Force 1 shoe, of all things.
As part of the AF1 Silver Service installation at Dover Street Market, the Wilson Brothers (Ben and Oscar) have created a traditionally lugged, steel–framed fixed wheel bicycle. This bespoke, hand-crafted piece draws inspiration from the track and captures the essence of what’s happening on the streets today. The bicycle has been added to the curation at Dover Street Market which celebrates 25 years of the iconic Air Force 1.Oh, to be an onlooker in this culture.
And the comments on this article are hilarious, not sure whose side I should be on...

Instant Slimmer
So I've discovered that if you ever want to feel positive about your figure, don't bother looking at Lara Stone (she's a size 6 but likely also 6'). Go to Walmart instead. A trip there yesterday evening (bought an new air conditioner -- step 1 in renovation phase! Well, more like step 0.2) made me ponder about the demographics and economic distribution of body type. It blew my mind to see the assortment of 'groceries' that carts were filled with. Everything was artificial! Made me think back on the organic farming ("ecological agriculture") class I took last summer, and how we (I) take knowledge like this (about eating healthy, eating local, eating organic) for granted sometimes.
On another note, I saw this woman absolutely rocking a maxi dress. She was tall but still curvy in a way that only genetics can explain. And I don't mean curvy as a euphemism for chubby. She was tall and thin but in an athletic way. Oh, but I also saw a [misguided] girl wearing a light pink terrycloth Juicy tube dress. It said Juicy in an unfortunate place, that's how I know for sure. Oh and just in case you missed the Juicy embroidery, she was wearing the matching pink terrycloth Juicy sunhat... with matching "JUICY" embroidered across the brim in melon green.
Oh, kidz. God love you. (It's a Mean Girls quote, roughly.)

Sad Steve
www.sadsteve.com music search engine/aggregator/downloader is listed in our links at the top right, but I found out that apparently he (his name isn't really Steve) went to high school with one of my best friends (at Dartmouth)!
The world seems to get smaller every day.

Another funny thing about Conor Oberst
We had been ripping on them during their opening set, but when we met them backstage we still (though we made fun of the bassist for being the dumbest person in existence...he couldn't really form sentences) had to tell them "great show" and "congrats!"
Isn't language a funny filter for how we really feel? We still get somewhat starstruck, even if the people don't have much talent...
PS: Conor Oberst and I had turquoise rings and he liked my bracelets. He had some interesting jewelry himself, including a feather necklace that looked kind of like chest hair when he was on stage...
He was also wearing these amazing vintage boots from the 20's with rolled up black denim, which my friend and I agreed was very LA cool. And even though I don't really think LA is cool, I liked his clothing taste.

Conor Oberst

My friend tried on the jacket of the bassist (far left).
Why are they posing like that? I guess they're just facing arbitrary directions because they're too cool to face the camera. So apathetic.
C.O. also looks more like a Wayfarers person to me than an Aviators person.
Oh, and Phil (the drummer, scruffy beard second from right) was so nice! He was the best of the bunch in terms of friendliness/sobriety.

Wilco Concert
Pictures to come.
Concert was absolutely amazing. I was underwhelmed by Conor Oberst & Co.'s opening act (only song I knew was Four Wings, which I did like). They were probably on several substances, which explained why some of the instruments on stage were somewhat out of tune. Unless they were being "unique" by playing that way, which I doubt.
Wilco was magnificent: stage presence, musical skill and all-around sound was electrifying. They are the example of a band that is meant to be heard live--if you aren't a huge Wilco fan, you will be after going to a concert. Not only did I love Jeff Tweedy, but all the other band members were masters of their instruments.
Despite the pouring rain that cut the performance short, it was a great show. They even came out in the pouring rain to do an encore, which was magical because we were all absolutely soaked. God-like.
We encountered Conor Oberst and his band mates outside of their tour bus by the parking garage and took a couple of pictures. At the time they must've been tripping or something because they could barely speak, but I didn't care. A photo with a famous musician is good news to me.
After that, we got ourselves (thanks to my sneaky friend) into the backstage afterparty and got to talk to all the band members, Conor Oberst and the majority of Wilco save for Nels and Jeff Tweedy. I was star-struck the whole time, even though I realized that these guys are just regular guys who have a ton of musical talent; they dress pretty normally and everything. They have friends and family. They drink Miller Lite (okay, that was just the Conor Oberst group). All in all, an amazing time and this will not be my last time at a concert/sneaking around.
Three other bands I must see before I die: Radiohead, Of Montreal and Spoon.
It will happen.
